The district is a part of Gandaki Province in northern Nepal, straddles the Himalayas and extends northward onto the Tibetan Plateau. The district is one of the remotest areas in Nepal and is second in terms of the sparsity of population.

Arrival in Kathmandu

Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you will be met by a representative and transferred to your hotel. In the afternoon, you can explore the vibrant city of Kathmandu, visiting some of the many temples and historical sites, such as the Boudhanath Stupa, Swayambhunath Stupa, and the Kathmandu Durbar Square.

Kathmandu - Fly to Pokhara

In the morning, you will take a flight to Pokhara, a beautiful lakeside city situated at the foot of the Annapurna Himalayas.

Pokhara is a popular tourist destination and offers stunning views of the mountains. You can spend the day exploring the city, visiting the Phewa Tal lake, or taking a hike to the World Peace Pagoda.

Pokhra – Fly to Jomsom (2,720 m)

  • Arrive in Jomsom, the gateway to Upper Mustang
  • Explore the town, visit the Muktinath Temple (optional jeep ride), and acclimatize to the higher altitude.

Jomsom - Kagbeni (2,810 m)

  • Short jeep rides from Jomsom to Kagbeni, a village at the confluence of the Kali Gandaki and Muktinath rivers.
  • Explore the village and visit the Kagbeni Monastery with its unique Tibetan architecture.
  • Enjoy the contrasting landscapes of the arid gorge and lush green fields.

Kagbeni - Chele (3,050 m)

  • Moderate trek along the Kali Gandaki River Gorge.
  • Observe the dramatic change in vegetation and witness the unique rock formations.
  • Reach Chele, a small village with traditional mud-brick houses.
  • Visit the Chele Gompa overlooking the valley.

Chele - Geling (3,570 m)

  • Challenging trek with steeper ascents offering stunning Himalayan views.
  • Reach Geling, a high-altitude village with a unique landscape.
  • Visit the Geling Gompa and witness the local way of life.

Geling - Tsarang (3,520 m)

  • Moderate trek with gradual ascents and descents.
  • Enjoy panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.
  • Arrive in Tsarang, the administrative center of Upper Mustang.
  • Explore the Tsarang Fort, the Royal Palace, and the Muktinath Monastery.

Tsarang - Lo Manthang (3,800 m)

  • Relatively easy trek through a wide valley.
  • Cross the dramatic red wall of Mustang marking the entrance to the hidden kingdom.
  • Reach Lo Manthang, the walled city and capital of Upper Mustang.
  • Explore the old town, the Raja’s Palace, and climb the city walls for breathtaking views.

Lo Manthang - Explore Lo Manthang

  • Rest day to explore Lo Manthang and its surrounding areas.
  • Visit the Chosser Caves, believed to be 2,000 years old.
  • Hike to nearby viewpoints for panoramic sunrises and sunsets over the Himalayas.
  • Immerse yourself in the unique Tibetan culture and traditions.

Lo Manthang - Ghar Gompa (4,620 m)

  • Challenging trek with steep ascents and descents.
  • Requires good physical fitness and acclimatization.
  • Reach Ghar Gompa, a beautiful monastery perched on a cliffside.
  • Enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Ghar Gompa - Luri Gumba (3,860 m) - Chuksang (3,020 m)

  • Moderate trek through a scenic route with diverse landscapes.
  • Visit Luri Gumba, a hidden monastery with stunning views.
  • Descend to Chuksang, a village with traditional houses built on a slope.
  • Explore the village and soak in the local culture.

Day 11: Chuksang – Jomsom (2,720 m)

  • Moderate trek along the Kali Gandaki River Gorge.
  • Enjoy the scenic landscapes and diverse vegetation.
  • Arrive in Jomsom, marking the end of your Upper Mustang adventure.
  • Celebrate your trek and relax before your onward journey.

Jomsom – Fly to Kathmandu via Pokhra.

In the morning, you will take a flight to Pokhara and Kathmandu.
