The great Gobi Desert covers one third of Mongolia’s territory. Hundreds of years ago the desert was part of the main trade route between East and West, with camel caravans crossing the vast steppe loaded with perfumes, silks, spices and other goods. This short excursion is an introduction to the Gobi’s rare wildlife, intriguing landscapes, and resourceful nomads in constant search of grazing land for their herds.

ULAANBATOR TO WHITE STUPA

Tsagaan Suvraga / White Stupa is 400 meters long cliff that was formed around 10 million years ago when it was covered by a sea. Over the millennia the sea dried up and the erosion eventually created these distinctive looking structures known as escarpments. The erosion also exposed around different areas on the soil that met with oxygen create the brilliant colors of white, yellow and purple.

WHITE STUPA TO YOL VALLEY

Discover beautiful Yolyn Am or also known as Yol Valley (translates to Lammergeier Gorge or Lammergeier Valley) located in the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park. Very wide at the entrance, it narrows gradually into a remarkable gorge. Ice formed by a brook is visible even in summer (until the end of July) and tourists admire the mountain sheep and goats on the almost vertical slopes.

Unveil the beauty of Yolyn Am (Yol Valley), also known as Lammergeier Gorge, nestled within Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park. Witness its dramatic transformation – a wide entrance that gradually narrows into a remarkable gorge. Explore this unique landscape after breakfast with a scenic drive to Yolyn Am. A delicious lunch will fuel your afternoon adventure – a hike to the mesmerizing iced mountain formations, visible even in summer (until the end of July). Keep your eyes peeled for mountain sheep and goats scaling the near-vertical slopes. Later, continue your journey to a traditional nomadic family’s camp for dinner and an overnight stay at a comfortable tourist camp.

YOL VALLEY TO KHONGOR DUENS

Khongoryn Els are some of the largest and most spectacular sand dunes in Mongolia. Also known as the Duut Mankhan (Singing Dunes – from the sound they make when the sand is moved by the wind), they are up to 300m high, 12km wide and about 100km long. The largest dunes are at the north-western corner of the range. From afar the dunes look painted on the south horizon in front of those gorgeous granite mountains.

Embracing the Song of the Sand: A Day at Khongoryn Els

Depart for the majestic Khongoryn Els, also known as the Singing Dunes. Witness these impressive sand formations rise up to 300 meters high, stretching 12 kilometers wide and 100 kilometers long. As we approach, marvel at the way these dunes appear painted on the southern horizon, contrasting beautifully against the granite mountains.

The adventure unfolds! Choose your preferred way to conquer the dunes:

  • Hike to the Summit: Embark on a challenging yet rewarding hike to the top of a sand dune. Take in breath taking panoramic views and experience the exhilarating feeling of accomplishment.
  • Camel Ride: Opt for a more traditional experience with a camel ride through the dunes. Enjoy a unique perspective of the vast landscape as you learn about this iconic mode of transportation in Mongolia. (Choose one or offer both depending on your itinerary)

KHONGOR DUENS TO FLAMING CLIFFS & ONGI MONASTARY

Red sandstone cliffs and canyons, Flaming Cliffs is one of the most famous paleontological sites in the world. The area was so named by the American paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews due to its outstanding orange color seen at sunset.
Among the numerous fossils excavated here, Roy Chapman Andrews’s discovery in 1922 of the first dinosaur eggs ever revealed in the world made the area famous. Thus the paleontologists hypothesized that the dinosaurs gave birth babies.

ONGI MONASTARY TO ORKHAN WATERFALLS

Orkhon waterfall, also called Ulaan Tsutgalan, is one of the best sights in central Mongolia. About 25m downstream from the waterfall you can climb down to the bottom of the gorge; 22m deep and dotted with pine trees. Approximately 20.000 years ago, the waterfall was formed due to earthquake and merged from volcanic eruptions. However, the water doesn’t run all year and will only start to flow after the first good summer rain. Best time to see it is late July and August.

ORKHAN WATERFALLS TO ERDENEZUU & KHARKORIN

Kharakhorum was the most important city in the history of world trade holding during the 13th century and, former residents of those who once ruled Mongolia established capital city in 1220. About 40 years, this was the center of one of the most powerful empires in the world and everything was controlled from here. The city had a surrounding wall with four stone turtles which used to symbolize longevity and solidarity of the city have been left as a little to see.

Terelj National Park is located 65 km northeast of Ulaanbaatar by paved road. High granite stone mountains with forest-covered northern slopes, multitudes of wildflower meadows along with the spectacular shape rocks formed by wind is a favorite scenery for the visitors. Fast-flowing rivers and streams make the national park more beautiful.
Genghis Khan Statue Complex: The largest equestrian statue in the world, the imposing Genghis Khan Statue Complex is a must-see when in Mongolia. Enjoy the sights and sounds of open field and attractive mountain scenery.
